Kintaro Hattori founded the K Hattori Clock Shop at the age of 21. The brand’s first clocks and watches were produced during the 1890's under the name Seikosha. In 1913 the company produced Japan's first wristwatch called the Laurel, marking the beginning of a series of achievements. The first watches under the Seiko name were released in 1924, with Seiko being the only name used on the brand’s watches since 1937. Over the years, the brand has become synonymous with precision timekeeping. A Leader in Innovation During the early 1970s, Seiko rocked the watch industry to its core. In 1969 Seiko released the world’s first quartz watch. This invention is quoted as being the cause of the “Quartz Crisis” of the 1970s. Seiko helped the watchmaking industry enter a new era. The brand’s innovatory spark has not been extinguished and Seiko continues to prove itself as a leader. In 2012 the brand released the Seiko Astron, the first GPS solar watch which is accurate to 1 second in 100,000 years. Seiko has also developed kinetic technology, the first prototype of this technology was unveiled in 1986.
