Certina Watches

Certina watches are well-known for their precision, reliability and sporty character. The brand has built itself a solid international reputation on quality Swiss workmanship. Over its 130-year history, Certina has proven its technical abilities through the creation of its DS system. Built to an uncompromisingly high standard, Certina watches are built to last. The History of Certina Certina is a Swiss watchmaker founded in Grenchen, in 1888, by Adolf and Alfred Kurth. The brothers’ business quickly developed allowing them to expand further. At the beginning of the 1900s, the Kurth brothers introduced their own watches under the name "Grana". Gradually, however, the company began using the brand name Certina during the 1930s in order to create a more easily recognisable brand. The new name was easier to pronounce in many languages and was based on the Latin word "certus", meaning "sure". The name was officially registered in 1939 and became the sole brand name 10 years later, in 1949. The innovation which took Certina to new heights, however, was the implementation of the now famous DS concept. The brand’s Double Security system guaranteed shock resistance and water resistance up to 20 bar (200 meters), setting a new standard across the industry. Throughout the next several decades, the brand pushed itself and its DS system to reach its fullest potential. Certina was a part of an international expedition on the first successful ascent of the Dhaulagiri in western Nepal, took part in the US Navy's Sealab II underwater project, and the NASA Tektite underwater experiment. Due to its growing reputation and popularity, Certina became a favourite of Roger de Coster and Muhammad Ali. Not Just a Stylish Piece Certina watches definitely do much more than just look good. The watch brand focuses on technical finesse and excellent workmanship during the manufacturing process. In recent years, Certina has turned its attention to implementing more sustainable practices, redesigning and bettering some of its iconic models as well as protecting its mascot the sea turtle.
